    According to careerbuilder.com, more than 60% of new leaders don’t get any training at all.     Did you hear the news? Our chapter is excited to announce that on May 6, during a special live announcement at the ASTD 2014 International Conference & Exposition, in Washington, D.C., President and CEO, Tony Bingham, and the Board of Directors announced that ASTD is changing its name to the Association for Talent Development (ATD). Select this link to learn more about this exciting new direction for our National and Local Members.

    Tony talked about how our profession has grown over the 70 years that the association has been serving the field. What hasn’t changed in that time is the purpose of our work:  developing people – their knowledge, skills, and abilities.

    ASTD is changing to the Association for Talent Development to demonstrate how the impact, breadth, and influence of our profession stretches beyond training.

    We will be transitioning over the next year. Many assets have already been created for us by the national team, including our new logo. While our name may be changing, the chapter’s board of directors want to assure you the local programming, networking, and services you have come to value and enjoy through the chapter will not change, nor will the chapter’s mission and vision. Like national ATD, training and development will remain at the core of our chapter, and we pledge that our service and commitment to you is stronger than ever.

    We will continue to keep you abreast of our change, and look forward to you joining us on this journey; together, we are creating a world that works better!

    Who’s Who

    This month we are featuring Christine Zimmerman who is a Hawkeye ASTD member in our Cedar Rapids location. We asked Christine a few questions about herself so we could get to know her better.

     

    On the job: Tell us a little about where you work and what you do:

    I work at the Nordstrom Direct in Cedar Rapids. I'm on the Learning and Development team with a focus on developing new leaders through performance evaluations, providing timely feedback and teaching development classes.

     

    What part of your job do you like best?

    I love teaching classes! Being in front of the classroom and helping others to increase their knowledge and understanding is an amazing feeling!

     

    What part of your job do you find the most challenging?

    Finding time to fit everything in! I have some very large teams of leaders to work with and provide feedback to, so time management can be a challenge.

     

    What is the best advice you have ever received about how to do your job better that has made a positive difference for you?

    Learn to take responsibility for your part in the development of your team and your company rather than allowing things to "happen to you." Quit asking "how did this happen?" and ask, "how can I make this better?"

     

    Why did you join Hawkeye ASTD?

    My Manager signed me up and I'm glad she did!

     

    What do you like best about being a Hawkeye ASTD member?

    Learning about the opportunities for development available in the area.

     

    Tell us one thing most people don’t know about you.

    I was home-schooled in elementary and middle school.
